When building a spacecraft it is very important to test everything over and over to make sure that there will be no surprises and that everything works properly.
The SDO spacecraft will have a total of 3 instruments onboard to help scientists study the Sun. Each instrument is built by various institutions. Once fully built, the instruments will be be sent to Goddard Space Flight Center for integration into the actual spacecraft.
