Filament Break

Filament_twist.jpg

Part of a long solar filament rose up, formed a big loop, and then broke away from the Sun (Nov. 18, 2014). Notoriously unstable, filaments are long strands of plasma held above the Sun by powerful magnetic forces. The break away was also associated with a coronal mass ejection. The images are a combination of two wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light. Since the Solar Dynamics Observatory watches the Sun 24 hours a day, it doesn't miss any of the action.
