Growing Sunspots

Spots_grow.jpg

As befits the beginning of growing season around here, the Sun produced a real growth spurt in the size of two sunspots in just 2.5 days (Apr. 8-10. 2013). The area of each of the spots AR1718 and AR1719) began to spread as its core grew as well. Now both spots are facing towards Earth and could produce space weather. The have produced smaller flares already and have the magnetic field configuration to produce larger ones. We will be keeping a close eye on these two. Credit: Solar Dynamics Observatory/NASA.
