Flare and Roiling CME

Mflare_304big.jpg

An M-class (medium-sized) flare erupted on the Sun and sent a coronal mass ejection (CME) streaming into space (Aug. 18, 2013). The flare is seen as a strong brightening of an active region; the CME is the long strands of plasma that curl and spin away from the Sun. The video clip, taken in extreme ultraviolet light, covers less than three hours of activity. Flares occur frequently on the Sun, though most of them are smaller than this one.
