An active region that had only produced minor flares finally let loose with a medium-sized flare (Apr. 17-18, 2016). The video clip of the flare and its aftermath covers about 5 hours of activity. The outburst sent a cloud of radiation and plasma into space. Flares are brief but intense solar storms seen here (in a blend of two wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light) as a short series of bright white flashes followed by slinky-like arches near the SunÕs surface that show the magnetic field reorganizing itself.
