Imaging in Multiple Wavelengths


The video shows a sampling of the Sun taken on Aug. 17, 2016 at almost the same time for ten of its instruments. The same active regions (one near the left center and two to the right straddling the center) are visible in all of the images, but each image captures unique features, taking material at different temperatures and distances above the Sun. SDO images the Sun every 12 seconds in multiple wavelengths to link changes in the surface to interior changes. Data from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly suite of instruments provides 10 different wavelengths. And the Heliospheric and Magnetic Imager offers several more, all at higher resolution than ever before. Together, they give scientists a wealth of data for solar studies and analysis.
